Have you ever just sat back and wondered why do people have affairs? Regardless of the reason, why on earth would anyone in their right mind cheat on their partner who loves them more than anything?
How can one cheat on a person who he/she in love with, a person you trust, a person who has dedicated great effort and time to develop a relationship? How is it possible?
In reality, we cannot control what our partners do behind our backs. We may trust them blindly, in fact, more than anyone in our life. However, although it may seem unreal, there are many reasons why people cheat. It could be because of the numerous challenges that arise in a relationship, or it could be something far more significant, like:
According to a survey conducted by Julia Omarzu (a psychologist at Loras College), it was revealed that one of the most common reasons cited by individuals why they had an affair or cheated on their partner was due to lack of sexual satisfaction. Both men and women who enter into affairs are usually hoping to get better sex or looking for ways to improve their sex lives. They may enjoy many other mutual activities with you but, for whatever reason, the sex is not working for them, hence why they thought about engaging in a sexual relation or affair with someone else.
Partners who usually do not feel understood, supported, or loved tend to engage in affairs. This goes for both men and women. However, often men cheat out of boredom (as they consider sex only as sex), while women see it as a more intimate thing. Regardless, seeking emotional intimacy is nearly compelling as a reason for the affair as seeking physical intimacy. Participants of the study mentioned above stated that lack of emotional satisfaction with their primary partners was a cause for emotional closeness with another person.
This may sound a little harsh, but more often than not, it is true. Partners may be together, but may not be able to connect well. There may be financial issues, trouble in understanding, or even performance anxiety. Regardless of the cause of social/emotional disconnection, if these problems are not sorted, your partner may resort to having an affair. Sexual closeness combined with emotional intimacy along with better understanding could result in your partner falling in love with someone else. This may not mean they never fell in love with you, but chances are they bonded well with another person.
Many people who have affairs are often overwhelmed when other people want them. Not every person will know your partner is engaged, married, or in a relationship, but for women and men, the simple words “I want you to be mine” from another person can do many things. Knowing that other people want them can push them into the arms of those precise people, sadly.
In all cases, the feeling of being cheated on and the person you trust the most lying to YOU is one of the worst experiences of life.
