Ways to tell if a relationship could be detrimental to someone’s health

To ensure a healthy marriage, it’s important to take a step back occasionally and evaluate the health of the relationship. If it has soured, like milk in a sunny car, it may be time to consider separation or filing for divorce. Choosing not to do so, and ignoring the signs that it’s time to move on, can be harmful to your health.

More specifically a study from the Journal of Cardiology, unhealthy relationships can increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and high blood pressure.

Here are eight ways to tell if a relationship could be detrimental to someone’s health:

They’re waiting for their spouse to change

Someone who sticks in a marriage because they wish something would change is commonly trapped in a victim’s mindset. This behaviour is highly common in relationships which involve abuse or addiction. If an individual finds that they are more in love with the idea of their partner than who his or her partner actually is, it may be time to jumpstart divorce proceedings.

They feel hopeless

A person who has given up on improving his or her marriage can become in a spider’s web of hopelessness and despair. For these people, there’s no longer any will or desire to what’s broken. At this point, the relationship becomes a robotic and bitter chore. This is one of the surest signs that it’s time to end a marriage.

The relationship is full of tension

If most conversations between a couple happen to be combative, defensive, or argumentative, it’s difficult to typify their relationship as healthy. If most time spent communicating leaves the individuals involved on edge, second-guessing themselves, or uncomfortable, it may be time to look for a good divorce lawyer.

Intimacy has gone the way of the dodo

Though a lack of sex is certainly an indicator hat intimacy has waned, intimacy is so much more than that. It’s also about affection, openness, and respect. When a gentle touch becomes a cause for celebration, or the space between a couple is filled with secrets, affairs and poor communication become commonplace.

It’s become more about me, than we

In a healthy marriage, partners work together to run the household, parent the children, and support one another.   A relationship in which partners live separate lives is unlikely to last very long.

There’s no respect

Healthy marriages rest on a strong foundation of trust, love, and respect. If the latter item no longer exists, it may be a sign that the fire’s gone out. Both halves of a couple should admire one another and take pride in their partner’s lifestyle and decisions. In marriages where this is not the case, the parties involved can be consumed by feelings of loneliness, resentment, or rejection. Divorce soon follows.

Compromise has become impossible

If a couple cannot agree on whether to have children, how often to have sex, who does which chore, where to live, or how to spend money, the marriage may be in trouble. An ability to compromise is often the mortar that holds a marriage together.

They’re constantly questioning if their spouse is right for them

They’re constantly questioning if their spouse is right for them. If one spouse constantly dreams of a life without the other, the marriage doesn’t stand a chance. A person questioning whether it’s wise to stay in a relationship either

  • Doesn’t know themselves well enough to decide what’s best for them.
  • Knows that the relationship isn’t cutting the mustard.

No matter what the case is, this indicates that it’s time to act.

A relationship that checks shows more than one or two of the above either needs to end or face a dire intervention. Remember that life continues after divorce. In fact, if a marriage has been a leaden weight on someone for years, life afterwards could even be better than what preceded it.
