Attending the family or federal circuit courts

Family Court is fraught with drama, passion, and emotions. However, the way you behave in court can directly influence the outcome of the case.

While family court exposes the deepest emotions of families, it is important to put your best foot forward. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your court appearances.

  • 1. Dress for success

First impressions count and it will be the first thing the judge notices. Dress appropriately, wearing a conservative outfit that is befitting of the event.

  • 2. Focus

Turn your phone off before entering the courtroom and pay attention to the proceedings.

  • 3.  Manage your emotions

Your ex's lawyer may seem like your worst enemy but guard against pointless aggression, as the judge will notice it and will not take it lightly. At all times, manage your emotions and don't let any comments draw out the worst in you.

  • 4.  Don't be a drama queen

Emotions run high during family law matters, but it is important to stay calm. You're not acting in a soap opera and don't get points for being over-dramatic. Avoid rolling your eyes, making gestures, sniggering or sighing loudly. At all times, remain polite and logical, as that will preserve your credibility.

  • 5.  Stay positive

The reason you're here is that you and your ex-are not getting along. You may have a list of-of all your ex's wrongdoings. However, it is good to also remember a few positives about your ex and to give them credit where it's due.

Following these steps will ensure that the judge will see you as a balanced, well-rounded individual and that is bound to view you as a believable, sympathetic witness worthy of a fair agreement.
