Police have revealed an alarming spike in family violence in Victoria over the holiday season, with a 30 per cent increase in incidents.
There were 1100 additional incidents linked to domestic violence over the last Christmas period, police said.
The 4700 reported assaults are up about 30 per cent from the 3600 incidents reported during the same period in 2011.
Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said the jump was "not totally surprising''.
But he attributed the spike in violence to increased confidence the public has in reporting crimes to police.
"When we do start having these conversations it does encourage people to report and simply not tolerate behaviours such as assaults in the home,'' Mr Lay told 3AW today.
He said police know there are often family tensions over the Christmas period, especially with alcohol and drug use added to the mix. Read full article
